Van Gogh

Van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter whose work, notable for its beauty, emotion and bold and vibrant colors, highly influenced 20th century art and helped lay the foundations of modern art. He was famed for his bold, dramatic brush strokes, which expressed emotion and added a feeling of movement to his works. Van Gogh deliberately used colors to capture mood, rather than using colors realistically. No other artist was doing so at this time. Van Gogh said: Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I see before me, I make more arbitrary use of color to express myself more forcefully.

Van Gogh was attempting to create harmony both by intensifying of the colors themselves and by arranging them in their complementary and simultaneous contrasts. His legacy lives on having left a lasting impact on the world of art.
